Source Audio Quality – A Very Important Factor for Quality Transcription

Transcription, as we all know, involves the conversion of audio to text. The source file may be in the form of an audio or video file. Transcription services are commonly used in the medical, legal, business world. As for any other service, the quality of output transcript is of paramount importance in transcription. A quality transcript involves a ‘word to word’ documentation of the audio provided. While this might sound very simple, it actually is not!

Only a transcriber with a medical expertise can provide quality medical transcription, similarly, a legal audio can only be transcribed by a person who has experience in legal domains or is probably an advocate. Many professional companies are coming up that follow multi stage quality policy to ensure professional transcription services in India.

However, an expert transcriber would not be able to deliver a quality transcript unless the recorded audio is of good, or at least acceptable quality. Coming to the basics, transcription involves that the transcriber listens to the audio, understands it and pens it down, clearly mentioning the characters, timings etc. But a poor source audio, simply, cannot be understood properly and hence cannot be transcribed with good quality. A poor audio quality also mandates guess work that may lead to an error prone transcript.

Now, another important factor that comes up while transcribing audio is the use of hi-fi audio instruments. Thus, the use of noise cancellation headphones can definitely help the transcriber listen to the audio clearly and hence yield a better text output. There are some software’s also available in the market that eliminate the background noise, hissing etc, thus enabling the audio to be heard more clearly. However, the bottom line is that the source audio must be of a bare minimum quality standard to be transcribed properly.
